Every reusable cup proposal contains the same sentence: the deposit ensures the cups come back. It does not, entirely. A deposit sets the price of not returning; it does not remove the reasons people fail to.
Understanding those reasons is the difference between a scheme that loses eight per cent of its cups over a weekend and one that loses thirty.
What the deposit actually does
A deposit converts a lost cup into a paid cup. That is genuinely useful — it caps the financial damage and it funds replacements. But it stops working at two edges, and both are predictable.
At the bottom: if the deposit is lower than the perceived value of keeping the cup, people keep it deliberately. A well-printed festival cup with a good line-up on it is a souvenir, and a two-euro deposit is a reasonable price for a souvenir. That is not a failure of the scheme; it is a purchase, and it should be modelled as one.
At the top: if the deposit is high enough to stop people keeping cups, it is also high enough to slow the bar down. Every refund is a transaction, and transactions at a bar are the constraint on how much you sell. A deposit that solves the loss problem by creating a queue problem has not solved anything.
The real variable: where does the cup go when the hand is full
Watch a guest at an outdoor event. They are holding a cup, a phone and something to eat. One of those three is going down on a table, a wall or the grass — and it is always the cup, because it is the only one that can be set down without consequence.
A cup put down is a cup lost. Not stolen, not kept: forgotten. This is the single largest category of loss in most schemes, and no deposit level fixes it, because the guest did not decide anything.
Two accessories change this measurably, and both cost less than the cups they save:
- Cup holder lanyards — the cup hangs at chest height and the hands are free. The guest never chooses whether to put it down, because the question does not arise.
- Cup holder clips — the same effect clipped to a belt or a bag, at a lower cost per unit.
- Cups with a moulded lanyard hook — no accessory needed at all; the hook is part of the cup.

One size, not three
Multiple cup sizes look like good service and behave like an operational tax. Each size is its own deposit value at the bar, its own stack height in storage, its own wash batch and its own line on the reorder. Staff make mistakes across sizes under pressure, and every mistake is money.
Run one size across a site unless the drinks menu genuinely requires a second. If you serve draught beer, note that half a litre with head does not fit in a 500 ml cup — 550 ml is the correct size, and getting this wrong is the most common specification error in the category. The full size range runs from 300 ml to 1,2 l, but most events should use one of them.
Print decides whether the cup is worth keeping — in both directions
This cuts two ways and it is worth being deliberate about which way you want it to cut.
A cheap one-colour logo on a clear cup is a vessel. Return rates are high because nobody wants it. A full-colour cup with the artwork moulded into the wall is a souvenir — return rates fall, deposit income rises, and the cups that leave are carrying your brand into somebody’s kitchen cupboard for the next three years.
Neither is wrong. What is wrong is choosing the expensive print and then being surprised by the loss rate, or choosing the cheap one and wondering why nobody photographed the cups.

Washing is the part that gets underestimated
Cups have to be collected, washed and reissued during the event, not after it. That requires a return point people walk past anyway, crates that stack, and a wash capacity matched to the busiest hour rather than to the daily average.
Polypropylene handles standard commercial wash programmes without difficulty. The one caution: prolonged very high heat distorts the rim over many cycles, which affects stacking long before it affects the cup. If cups come back from the wash and no longer nest tightly, the temperature is too high, not the cup too cheap.
A working checklist
- Set the deposit against the cup, not against the drink. It should exceed the cup cost and stay low enough that refunds do not slow the bar.
- Give the cup somewhere to live. Holder lanyards, clips or a moulded hook. This is the highest-return line in the whole budget.
- One size. 550 ml if you pour draught beer, 500 ml otherwise.
- Decide whether you want them kept. Then choose the print to match, and model the loss rate accordingly.
- Size the wash for the peak hour. Not the average.
- Count what comes back, by day. The pattern tells you whether you have a keeping problem or a putting-down problem, and they need different fixes.
The wider range
Not every event needs a PP festival cup. Unbreakable wine glasses suit receptions and wine fairs. Reusable shot glasses work for bars and spirits brands. Foldable silicone cups pack flat for delegate bags. For offices and conferences rather than bars, double-wall coffee cups are a different object with a different job.
