There is a difference between a lanyard made of recycled plastic and a lanyard made of no plastic. Recycled polyester is a good answer to “use less new material”; it is not an answer to “nothing petroleum-based leaves this event”. These four materials are.

A seed paper lanyard inverts the usual problem with event merchandise. Instead of asking what to do with three thousand straps on Monday morning, you ask attendees to plant them — and what was a disposal cost becomes the part of the event people photograph. It is the most expensive option on this page by a wide margin, because the paper is manufactured with the seeds already in it, and it is the only one whose end of life is a feature.
It is also, deliberately, the least durable. If the lanyard has to survive three days of rain and a lanyard-swapping desk, use corn PLA and give out something else to plant.
A cardboard lanyard with a plastic hook and a plastic breakaway is not plastic-free, and that is the first thing anyone examining the claim will pick up. Specify a metal or wooden hook and a wheat straw breakaway — moulded from an agricultural byproduct, as strong in use as plastic. It is a small cost and it is the whole point.
If the requirement is a nicer material rather than the absence of plastic — cotton, bamboo, cork, felt — see natural material lanyards. If it is recycled content at close to standard prices, rPET lanyards do that and are the easiest swap of the three. This page is for the case where the answer has to be “none”.
Yes. Wildflower seeds are embedded in the paper; the wearer plants the lanyard in soil, the paper decomposes and the seeds germinate. It is the only lanyard in the range whose end of life is a feature rather than a disposal problem, and it is why they get photographed and posted rather than binned.
Corn PLA is, completely — it mimics the strength and texture of polyester and handles a multi-day conference without any allowance. Washable paper is tear-resistant and survives moisture. Cardboard is engineered to last a typical trade show but is not a multi-season object. Seed paper is deliberately the least durable of the four, because it is meant to be planted rather than kept.
A fibre spun from corn starch instead of from petroleum. The resulting thread behaves like polyester — same strength, similar texture, prints the same — but it is plant-derived and biodegradable. It is the no-compromise option on this page: nobody handling it can tell it is not a normal lanyard until you say so.
Because it is reinforced recycled paper rather than a woven textile, so there is no weaving step. At around EUR 0,26 it is the cheapest lanyard we sell, and its Kraft-paper look is unmistakable, which is exactly why zero-waste events choose it. It is a single-event object; do not order it for staff who will wear it for a year.
