How to Choose a Lanyard: Construction, Print and Fitting

Almost every lanyard brief arrives the same way: a logo, a quantity and a date. What is missing is the part that decides whether the order works — and it is not the logo.

A lanyard is three independent decisions stacked on top of each other. Made in the right order they take five minutes. Made in the wrong order — which is what usually happens, because the logo arrives first — you end up designing artwork for a strap that cannot carry it, or paying for a woven finish on a band nobody will wear past lunchtime.

Decision one: the construction

This comes first because it constrains everything after it. A flat ribbon is a billboard; a round cord is not. A satin strap can only be printed on one side. A cord cannot be printed at all.

Bygg og anlegg Print area Feels like Velg dette når
Flat polyester or nylon Largest, both sides Standard varelager for arrangementer The default. Cheapest, most print, most fittings.
Round cord None on the cord itself Lighter, more comfortable, less like a giveaway Conferences and offices where the lanyard is worn all day.
Jacquardvevd The logo is the fabric Textured and expensive Staff lanyards meant to last beyond one event.
Satin One side only Smooth and light-catching VIP tiers and award ceremonies.
Neoprene Bra Cushioned and heavy duty Long shifts, heavy badges, site work.
Silicone or PVC Moderate Wipeable Healthcare, food handling, anywhere the strap gets cleaned.

The trap here is the round cord. It is chosen for comfort, and then somebody discovers the cord is too narrow to print on and the logo has to move onto a slider or a badge. That is not a problem — there are six ways to brand a cord — but it is a decision that belongs at the start, not after the artwork is approved.

Decision two: how the logo gets on

Three methods, and the choice is made by the artwork rather than by the budget.

Silketrykk Fargesublimering Vevd
Farge 1–4, Pantone-fargematchet, pris per farge Ubegrenset, fotografisk Up to four, in thread
Begge sider Pris per side Gratis, og kan variere Syns gjennom
Holdbarhet Surface layer Kan ikke sprekke eller flasse av Kan ikke blekne i det hele tatt
Passer til A logo in exact brand colours Grafikk til arrangementet, sponsorer, fargeoverganger Lanyards worn for years

A useful rule: if the artwork could be cut from coloured paper, screen print it. If it could not — a photograph, a gradient, a crowd shot — it has to be sublimation. And if the lanyard is staff ID that will be worn every day for three years, weave it, because in that time a printed surface will wear at the point where the strap rubs against a collar.

Decision three: what holds the badge

This is the decision people skip, and it is the one that generates the complaints. A badge hanging from a single hook is free to rotate, and it will — spending roughly half its day showing a blank white back to everyone the wearer meets.

  • Dobbel krok — two attachment points hold the badge flat so it cannot spin. The single most effective fix in this category, and it costs very little.
  • Bulldog clip — spring-loaded jaws grip almost any badge, laminate or wallet, including ones with no punched hole. Right when attendees bring their own passes or badges are printed on site.
  • Retractable reel — for badges that get swiped many times a day. Choose the integrated version rather than a clip-on: the moulded housing does not detach and does not flip.
  • Hookless — slots cut into the ribbon grip the badge holder directly, with no metal anywhere. Asked for where metal fittings are inconvenient: the strap itself holds the badge holder, with no metal on the lanyard at all.
  • Sikkerhetsutløser — releases under load at the back of the neck. Standard practice in schools, hospitals and anywhere a lanyard could catch in machinery, and it costs almost nothing. Specify it unless there is a reason not to.

Then, and only then, the material story

Sustainability is a fourth decision and it sits on top of the first three rather than replacing them. It also splits into three genuinely different claims that are routinely confused:

One detail decides whether any of these survive being examined: the fittings. A cotton lanyard finished with a nickel-plated hook, a plastic slider and a polyester breakaway is mostly not what it says it is, and that is the first thing a sceptical person will point at. Ask which hook and breakaway options can be run with your order. It costs a little more per piece and it is the entire difference between a natural lanyard and a natural-looking one.

When the lanyard has to do something else

A neck strap is a convenient place to hang more than a badge, and four variants exist because people kept asking:

  • Bottle carrying straps — a silicone ring, a hard plastic bracket or a cord sling that makes a PET bottle wearable.
  • Phone straps — an anchor patch through the charging port cutout works on virtually any phone.
  • Charging cable lanyards — the cable er the strap, which solves the one thing every conference delegate has forgotten.
  • Bottle openers — an integrated metal opener, which is why these get kept long after the festival.

Two things worth knowing before you brief

Width is decided before the artwork, not after. 20 mm is the standard and gives room for a logo plus an event name on both sides. 10 and 15 mm fit a logo and nothing else. 25 mm is worth it when the strap carries sponsors rather than one brand. Designing at one width and producing at another is the commonest cause of a logo that cannot be read.

Screen print is priced per colour per side. A two-colour logo on both sides is four print positions, not one. It is worth knowing that number before the artwork is signed off rather than when the quotation arrives.

The five-minute version

  1. How long will it be worn, and by whom? That picks the construction.
  2. Could the artwork be cut from coloured paper? That picks the print method.
  3. What kind of badge, and how often is it swiped? That picks the fitting.
  4. Does a sustainability claim have to survive being checked? If yes, specify the fittings too.

Everything else — colour, length, packaging — is detail that follows from those four answers. The full lanyard range is here, organised the same way.
