A reflector is the cheapest promotional item in the catalogue and one of the few that can actually save someone’s life. That combination makes it unusually easy to buy badly: at these unit prices the temptation is to treat it as a shape with a logo on it.
This was a run of 10 000 reflectors for a grocery retail chain, one of several repeat orders across the same programme. The client is not named here.
The thing that separates a reflector from a shiny plastic shape
A reflector has a measured retroreflection value and, in the EU, a standard behind it — EN 13356 for pedestrian accessories. A product that meets it bounces light back toward the driver’s eyes from a defined angle range at a defined distance. A product that does not may still look bright in the shop and be nearly invisible at 100 metres in rain.
Ask for the certificate, not the adjective. Suppliers who have it produce it immediately; suppliers who do not will send a photo of a bright object.
Hard, soft or textile
- Hard plastic: highest reflection value, die-cut to any shape, cheapest at volume. Hangs from a zip or a bag. This is the workhorse and the right answer for a 10 000-piece giveaway.
- Soft textile: a fabric-backed reflector that can be sewn or tied. Lower reflection value, better feel, used on children’s clothing where a hard shape would be uncomfortable.
- Slap band: a reflective strip that wraps the arm or ankle. More visible because it moves, more expensive, and the format people actually wear rather than carry.
Shape is the branding, not the print
The print area on a small reflector is tiny and the printed side does not reflect. What people see is the silhouette. A chain that die-cuts its own logo shape gets a recognisable object; a chain that puts its logo on a circle gets a circle. The die costs once and the shape is reusable across years — this is where the budget should go on a repeat programme.
Practical notes
- Attachment: a split ring is fine for adults; a soft loop is better for a school programme where a metal ring on a coat is a snag risk.
- Season: reflector demand in the Nordics and Baltics peaks in September–November. Order in summer or accept the queue.
- Quantity: at ten thousand the unit price is close to the floor, which is why these programmes are usually annual rather than monthly.
