Two separate 300-piece orders, a year apart, for two very different organisations — a sports club and a municipality issuing school passes — and both landed on the same product: a card holder with a retractable yo-yo reel. When unrelated buyers converge on one solution it is usually because the alternatives fail in the same way.
What the reel actually solves
A card on a plain lanyard has to be lifted to the reader, which means either bending forward at a turnstile or taking the lanyard off over your head. Neither is a problem once. Both are a problem twenty times a day.
A yo-yo reel lets the card be pulled to the reader and released; the cord retracts and the card returns to the chest. It sounds trivial and it is the single most requested upgrade we see on badge systems — because it is the difference between a pass people wear and a pass people leave in a pocket.
Rigid holder or soft sleeve
- Rigid plastic holder: protects the card from bending, survives being dropped, and keeps a printed pass readable for a school year. Heavier, and it needs a slot that matches the card orientation.
- Soft PVC sleeve: cheaper and lighter, and it accepts cards of slightly different sizes. It creases, and a creased pass reads badly at a reader.
- Laminated card, no holder: the card itself is the badge. Cheapest of all, and the right answer for a one-week event rather than a school year.
For a pass carried daily for a year, rigid wins. For an event, laminate.
Where the branding goes
Not on the holder — the card covers it. The visible branding area on this product is the lanyard and the reel housing. A printed lanyard with the organisation’s name is what people see across a room; the reel housing takes a small pad print or a domed logo. Buyers routinely pay for a printed holder that is then completely hidden behind the card.
Practical notes
- Attachment: a reel with a belt clip is right for staff who wear it on a waistband; a reel integrated into the lanyard is right when the pass hangs at chest height.
- Breakaway: for children and for anyone working near machinery, the lanyard must have a safety breakaway. This is not optional on a school programme.
- Orientation: decide portrait or landscape before ordering. Changing it after printing the cards means replacing the holders.
