A lift gate reads an RFID pass at about 20 cm. Presenting the pass at that distance while wearing gloves, carrying poles and looking through goggles is a small daily irritation, and a retractable holder removes it completely. That is why resorts, ski clubs and travel operators buy them by the thousand and put a logo on the reel face.
Three things fail on a retractable holder: the spring loses tension, the cord frays where it leaves the housing, and the clip opens on its own. Ski use is harder on all three than office use — the reel is pulled with a gloved hand, at an awkward angle, in the cold and wet, several times a day for a week. That is what the choice of body is for. Zinc alloy is the heavier, tougher housing and the sensible specification where the holder goes out with a season pass and has to still work in March. ABS is lighter and perfectly adequate for a one-week group trip, a school ski camp or a giveaway that is not expected to come back.
The reel face is a small round surface at chest or hip height, and it is looked at every single time the pass is pulled — by the wearer, and by everybody standing behind them in the lift queue. Small area, very high frequency. A pad print puts one or two flat colours on that face at the lowest cost. Doming covers the print with a clear resin lens, which lifts the colours slightly and takes the scuffing a jacket zip inflicts over a winter. A full-colour label is the route for photographic artwork or a resort identity that needs more than two colours. For a season-long item in cold, wet, abrasive use, the domed face is the one that still looks new at the end of it.
A spring-loaded reel with 75–90 cm of cord. Clip it to a jacket zip or a trouser loop, pull the pass to the reader, let go. The pass returns to the pocket on its own. This is the same construction as our Lanyards with Badge Reels and Fittings, with the cord and housing specified for cold, wet and repeated one-handed use.
Ski resorts and lift operators for the season pass programme. Ski clubs and schools for group trips. Travel operators as a welcome-pack item. Corporate ski weekends, where the logo rides on every guest’s jacket for four days. Buying happens in autumn, which makes this a useful counterweight to the summer festival season.

A carabiner clips to a jacket zip pull or a gear loop, the belt clip suits a trouser waistband, and the zip pull is the tidiest for a fixed jacket. Bodies come in ABS or zinc alloy with a transparent PVC pocket, from 100 pieces at 0.41 EUR.
