Corporate Drinkware: Bottle, Travel Mug or Cup

Drinkware has the best cost per impression in promotional merchandise, and the reason is unglamorous: unlike almost everything else in a goodie bag, it does a job the recipient already needed doing. A mug on a desk is seen by the same colleagues every working day for three years.

The category is also where the most money gets wasted, because five quite different objects share one word and get compared on unit price alone.

Start with temperature, then quantity

Two questions settle most of it.

Needs to hold temperature for Daudzums Product
Hours Tens to low hundreds Vacuum insulated bottle
An hour or two, drunk one-handed Tens to low hundreds Insulated travel mug or tumbler
Tens of minutes Hundreds to thousands Double-wall PP coffee cup
Not at all Thousands Sports or water bottle
Not at all, and it stays on a desk Any Ceramic mug

What “vacuum insulated” actually buys

Every vacuum bottle is double walled, but not every double-walled bottle is vacuum insulated — and that distinction is worth roughly ten hours.

A double-walled plastic tumbler has air between the walls, which slows heat transfer a little. A vacuum bottle has the air pumped out, and heat needs matter to travel through. That is why one holds temperature for eight to twelve hours and the other for perhaps forty minutes.

Two things halve the published figures in practice: opening the bottle, and filling it part-way. The air inside a half-empty bottle carries heat away far faster than the vacuum does.

The engraving decision

On steel, this matters more than the colour of the bottle.

Lāzergravēšana burns away the coloured coating and exposes bare steel underneath. It is permanent, dishwasher-proof, monochrome, and on a coloured bottle it produces a clean silver mark — so the coating colour effectively becomes the second colour of the design. Pad or screen print carries brand colours but sits on the surface, and will eventually wear at the points where the bottle is gripped.

For a bottle intended as a long-term gift, engrave it. For a bottle handed out at a race, print it — nobody is going to own it for five years.

The mistake almost everybody makes with steel

Most double-wall insulated bottles and mugs are hand wash only. A dishwasher cycle can work moisture into the wall cavity and destroy the insulation permanently — at which point an expensive vacuum bottle becomes a heavy ordinary one.

Lids are usually dishwasher safe even when the body is not. It is worth putting this on the card that goes with a corporate gift, because the recipient will otherwise discover it the hard way and blame the product.

Where the coffee cup fits

The double-wall PP coffee cup is the one people underrate, and it exists because of scale. It costs roughly a third of a steel travel mug, weighs far less, and is the only option in this list that works when the quantity is in the hundreds or thousands.

The double wall does two things, and the second is what people actually notice: it slows the drink cooling, and it keeps the outside comfortable to hold. A single-wall cup with a hot coffee in it needs a silicone or cork band around the middle before anyone can carry it — which is why so many of them have one.

Note what it is ne: a festival cup. A reusable event cup is a thin single-wall vessel designed to be washed and reissued hundreds of times under a deposit system, and it costs well under a euro. A to-go coffee cup is a personal object with a lid, meant for one owner. Different scheme, different product.

Water bottles: choosing by use

  • PE saspiežamā pudele — soft-walled with a push-pull sports cap. Cheapest per piece and the only one you can drink from at speed. Cycling, races, clubs.
  • RPET — rigid, recycled, at close to virgin-plastic price. The sustainability-led giveaway.

Ask for the food-contact declaration (EU 10/2011) for the exact model you order — BPA is the first question end users ask about a plastic bottle.

The ceramic mug still wins on arithmetic

It costs a little over a euro. It sits in plain sight for years. It does a job the recipient needed doing anyway. Nothing else in promotional merchandise matches that combination.

The only real decision is print method: screen print fires one to four solid colours into the glaze — cheaper, and completely dishwasher-proof. Sublimācija wraps photographic artwork around the whole mug, including under the handle, but requires a sublimation-coated mug, so the method has to be chosen before the model is.

The rule: if the artwork could be cut from coloured paper, screen print it. If it could not, use sublimation.

Two things to plan for

Ceramic breaks. A pallet of mugs will include losses. Order a few per cent over the exact headcount, and specify individual cartons if the mugs will be posted rather than handed over.

Size the bottle to the person, not to the spec sheet. 500 ml is the default and fits car cup holders and rucksack pockets. 750 ml is noticeably heavier when full and does not fit everywhere. Bigger is not automatically better.

Matching the object to the recipient

  • Race pack, thousands: PE sports bottle.
  • Conference, hundreds: double-wall PP coffee cup.
  • Onboarding pack: vacuum bottle, engraved.
  • Whole office: ceramic mug.
  • Client or partner gift: insulated travel mug, engraved, or a vacuum insulated bottle.
