Armband aus Bambusstoff mit einem umweltfreundlichen Verschluss aus Holz

Maamess – Armbänder aus Bambusstoff mit Holzverschluss

An agricultural and forestry fair is an awkward place to hand out a plastic wristband. The audience notices, and so does the press. But most “eco” wristbands are eco only down to the strap: the strap is bamboo or organic cotton, and then a polypropylene lock is clipped onto the end, which puts plastic back into every single band.

For Maamess the band is plastic-free end to end — a bamboo fibre strap with a wooden lock.

What bamboo fibre actually is

Bamboo viscose woven into a flat tape. It feels closer to cotton than to the slick polyester of a standard festival band, it takes a woven or printed mark, and it is biodegradable rather than merely recyclable — which is the honest distinction to make when a client asks. A polyester band with recycled content is still a plastic band.

The lock is the whole point

The wooden lock is a small disc with two slots; the strap threads through and cannot be pulled back without visibly tearing the tape. It is one-time, like a plastic lock, so entry control is not compromised. It is slightly slower to fit at a gate — roughly a second or two more per guest — which matters at a stadium and does not matter at a fair where people arrive across a whole morning.

There is also a bamboo lock version, and a version with no lock at all where the band is tied. Tied bands are the cheapest and the least secure; they suit a day pass, not a multi-day ticket.

Was es kostet

Expect a bamboo band with a wooden lock to sit between a printed fabric band and a leather one. The strap is not much more expensive than polyester; the lock is. Where budget is tight, the usual compromise is a recycled rPET strap with a plastic lock, which is cheaper and honest, or an organic cotton strap where the fibre is the story.

Print on natural fibre — one thing to know

Bamboo and cotton absorb ink differently from polyester. Sublimation, which gives photographic colour on polyester, does not work on natural fibre at all — the choice is woven branding or screen print, and both look better with a bold, simple mark than with a detailed one. Design for that up front rather than discovering it at proofing.
